The Importance of Women’s History Month: Why We’re Still Showing Up

As the Community Director of Wondery Outdoors, I’ve seen firsthand the impact that gathering in community can have. Every year, we dedicate time and resources to hosting our International Women’s Day fundraiser—a night of climbing, connection, and celebration. And this year, despite the struggles that many small businesses, including ours, are facing, we knew we had to keep it going.

Women’s History Month is a time to honor the resilience, contributions, and achievements of women past and present. It’s also a time to acknowledge the work that still needs to be done. With DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) funding slowing down across industries, many organizations that uplift underrepresented communities are facing increased challenges. That’s why this year, we teamed up with Hike Clerb, a nonprofit dedicated to equipping Black, Indigenous, and women of color with the resources and experiences to reclaim space in the outdoors.

Hike Clerb shared with us just how much this support means to them, as many brands and companies are pulling back on their DEI commitments. For us, continuing this annual event wasn’t just a choice—it was a necessity. We believe in the power of showing up, even when times are tough. There is healing in community, and when we come together to support one another, we remind ourselves of the strength that exists in unity.

This year’s event was a testament to that strength. With the local climbing and outdoor community by our side, we created an evening filled with fun climbing challenges, a thriving women-owned vendor marketplace, and a raffle to raise funds for Hike Clerb. Whether attendees were seasoned climbers or trying it for the first time, the energy in the room was electric—proving once again that spaces created by and for women are deeply impactful.

At Wondery Outdoors, our mission has always been about empowerment and inclusion in the outdoor space. While the road ahead for small businesses like ours remains uncertain, one thing is for sure: we will continue to uplift, support, and create opportunities for women in the outdoors.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, supported us, and reminded us why this work matters. Let’s keep climbing—together.
